Coronary Heart Disease
Coronary heart disease (CHD) is a condition in which plaque builds up in the arteries that supply the heart muscle with oxygen-rich blood. Plaque narrows the arteries, reduces blood flow, and increases the likelihood that blood clots will form, blocking blood flow and causing a heart attack. Over time, CHD can weaken the heart muscle and lead to heart failure and arrhythmias.
CHD is the most common type of heart disease and the leading cause of death in the U. S. for both men and women. Lifestyle changes, medicines, and/or medical procedures can effectively prevent or treat CHD in most people.1
