Giardiasis
Giardiasis is an acute form of gastroenteritis caused by the protozoan parasite, Giardia lamblia. Giardiasis outbreaks can occur in communities in both developed and developing countries. It is primarily transmitted to humans by water supplies that have been contaminated with human or animal feces. Transmission also occurs by direct contact, especially with asymptomatic carriers and by food contamination. Direct contact of Giardiasis has been responsible for outbreaks in institutions such as day care centers.
