Infectious Disease
Infectious diseases are caused by microorganisms that are spread by touching, eating, drinking, or breathing something that contains the microbe. Microbes can also spread through animal and insect bites, kissing, and sexual contact. The four main classes of microbes are bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa.
Infectious diseases include measles, Legionnaires’ disease, hepatitis A and B, HIV, among many others. They kill more people worldwide than any other single cause. Vaccines, proper hand washing, and medications can help prevent infections.
