Tuberculosis

Tuberculosis (TB) is caused by M. tuberculosis and is one of the deadliest diseases in the world.  Roughly a third of the people in the world are infected with TB with around 2 million deaths per year.  It is the leading killer of HIV-positive individuals.  The bacteria can be active or lie latent.  When active, it usually attacks the lungs, but may attack other parts of the body.  TB is spread from one person to another through the air when a person with active TB disease coughs, sneezes, or sings.  If not treated properly, active TB can be fatal.  Treatment includes taking several drugs for to 12 months exactly as prescribed.  Stopping the drugs too soon can lead to relapse and potentially allow for antibiotic resistance to form.
