Colon (Colorectal) Cancer

Colon cancer is the proliferation of cancer cells in the tissues of the colon. Age is a primary risk factor for developing the disease; more than 90 percent of people with colorectal cancer are diagnosed after age 50. A person with a parent or sibling who has the disease is somewhat more likely to develop it, as are people who have a condition that causes inflammation of the colon (such as ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease). Some studies suggest that diets high in fat and low in calcium, iron, and fiber and very low in fruits and vegetables may increase the risk of colorectal cancer.
