Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV)
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a significant cause of severe respiratory illness in premature babies and children up the the age of five years. Symptoms can range from a mild cold-like illness to bronchiolitis and pneumonia. It can easily be confused with other illnesses, such as influenza.
RSV is highly contagious and is a significant concern in hospital wards with premature babies. Treatment is primarily supportive care.
